About

As we approach the 50th year of organized meetings about radiopharmaceutical chemistry/sciences, it is important to maintain our history and memory of the founding members of this organization. Ever present from the beginning, Dr. Michael J. Welch’s legacy on the SRS is one of fostering talent and mentoring an entire generation of radiochemists, which is a field he helped invent. Mike’s legacy lives in many radiopharmaceutical chemists whom he has trained and who are now leading figures in the field. The SRS-Hot Atom Fund seeks to honor his passion and tenacity by supporting the first-ever comprehensive campaign to establish an annual grants and awards program within the SRS. Goals

Radiopharmaceutical Science is a growing field that has brought major contributions to patient care, particularly in the last two decades. Many cancer and neurology patients benefit from tracers that have made their way to the clinic and have proven instrumental to patient care. This growth means we need to train future scientists in our field.  This new generation of scientists will be instrumental in the treatment and outcomes of patients. It is imperative that we ensure their development and training all over the world.

The SRS serves as a networking platform that brings experts together in all aspects of radiopharmaceutical sciences. In the future, the endowment may be able to support small grants to encourage the initiation of new research by young investigators.

How you can support

The Hot Atom Fund has received over $500,000 in pledged donations — an important milestone in the fund’s development and one which inspires us to believe that fund will only continue to grow and be the means to providing much support to early career researchers.

This fund is permanently endowed. Endowed gifts provide security over the long term by expanding the Foundation’s permanent financial base and creating a predictable source of future income for the awards provided. The base amount provided by you will be invested in perpetuity and those investment earnings will be utilized to fund awards.
