ABOUT HELSINKI
GENERAL INFORMATION
SAFETY
Helsinki is considered a safe low crime city. However, like any big city with tourists, pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas. Take care of your belongings the way you would in any big city.
General emergency number: 112.
PAYMENTS AND CURRENCY
Currency of Finland is euro, €. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and most stores have contactless payment readers. ATMs can be found in several locations in the city center and shopping areas. Look for the signs for Otto and Nosto ATMs.
WI-FI
Free public Wi-Fi is widely available in Helsinki city center and in public buildings like libraries. Look for network named “Helsinki City Open WLAN”. It requires no registration or password and connects you to high-speed internet. Cafés, restaurants, and shops often provide free Wi-Fi, and the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport has free, unlimited, and high-speed access as well. While coverage is extensive, it is not absolutely city-wide, but rather focused on popular, central locations. For consistent, 24/7 internet access throughout the city, purchasing a local prepaid SIM or eSIM card is recommended as a reliable backup. A prepaid SIM card can be purchased at R-kioski convenience stores or mobile service company stores (Telia, Elisa, and DNA). There is a R-kioski at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
SUSTAINABILITY
Some tips for your visit:
Tap water quality is excellent in Helsinki. You can use refillable flasks instead of bottled water while exploring the city.
Best way to explore the city is on foot, by bike, or by public transport.
Look for sustainability labels, such as ‘Sustainable Travel Finland’, when choosing services or attractions.
Recycle and sort while traveling. Recycle bins are all around the city.

EASY DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TRIPS FROM HELSINKI
DAY TRIP TO TAMPERE OR TURKU
Tampere and Turku are nearby cities that are easily accessed by train. Trains run often, and the fastest journeys are under 2 hours for both cities. Tickets and live timetables are available via VR (Finnish Railways) website (https://www.vr.fi/en) and VR Matkalla mobile app.
DAY TRIP TO PORVOO
Porvoo, especially its Old Town, is a popular destination nearby. A quick intercity bus takes around 1 hour depending on service. You can compare operators, prices, timetables, and purchase tickets via Matkahuolto’s journey planner and online ticket store (https://www.matkahuolto.fi/passengers/bus-tickets-and-travel-cards).
DAY TRIP TO TALLINN (ESTONIA)
Tallinn is one of the easiest international day trips from Helsinki. Ferries run frequently every day. Ferry rides take about 2-2.5 hours between Helsinki and Tallinn. Most ships depart from Helsinki West Harbour and arrive close to Tallinn’s city center, making a day visit very convenient. For tickets and timetables, see the operators’ sites such as Tallink Silja Line (https://www.tallink.com/fi, departure in Helsinki: West Terminal), Viking Line (https://www.sales.vikingline.com/), departure in Helsinki: Katajanokka Terminal), and Eckerö Line (https://www.eckeroline.com/, departure in Helsinki: West Terminal).
MULTI-DAY TRIP TO STOCKHOLM (SWEDEN)
Stockholm is ideal as a longer add-on trip from Helsinki via an overnight cruise ship.
The cruise ship typically leaves Helsinki in the early evening and arrives in Stockholm the next morning, which saves daytime travel and makes it easy to plan a 2-4 day extension. Tickets and timetables are available via Tallink Silja Line (https://www.tallink.com/fi, departure in Helsinki: Olympia Terminal) and Viking Line (https://www.sales.vikingline.com/, departure in Helsinki: Katajanokka Terminal).
